Yvonne Collins has over 20 years experience counselling and teaching teens/young adults in a variety of educational settings.  She uses her humour and down-to-earth approach to support and listen to her clients’ struggles non-judgementally. Yvonne works with clients collaboratively, offering an individualized approach based on their personal needs and goals.

Yvonne is particularly interested in providing clients with hands-on, practical skill development to increase psychological flexibility/resilience to help cope with difficult thoughts, feelings, sensations, urges and memories as they arise in day-to-day living.  She believes that taping into mindfulness, self-compassion and personal values, can help build life-enhancing patterns of behaviour and lessen the impact of painful feelings and unhelpful thoughts.

Experience

Yvonne was former competitive synchronized swimmer, and coached young women for over 17 years as an NCCP certified coach.  She completed a B.A. Honours at the University of Toronto, followed by a Bachelor in Education (Intermediate/Secondary).  While teaching high school in St John’s Newfoundland she also facilitated a social skills group for teens on the autism spectrum.  She moved to Ottawa to complete a Master of Education in Educational Counselling (now called Counselling Psychology), completing an internship at a high school guidance office.  Since the completion of her Master degree in 2003, she has worked at Carleton University as an Academic Counsellor, Career Counsellor, clinical supervisor for M.Ed. interns and Koru Mindfulness Teacher. 

In her roles, she counselled post-secondary students one-on-one on personal, academic, disability and career issues. Additionally she teaches meditation, mindfulness and stress management to groups.

Yvonne has completed a number of professional development courses in Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT),  as well as Mindfulness/Meditation. 

Fees

Fees for services are $150 for a 50 minute session. Yvonne accepts cheque, cash, or etransfer.  At the end of each session, you are given a receipt which you can send to your third party insurance. Services are covered by most third party insurance.

Yvonne practices under the supervision of a Registered Psychologist for clients aged 12-18 only.

Fees may be lowered for those with limited financial resources.
